Approaching Big Springs |

Some old friends of ours (Brendan and Jane) from Santa Barbara are living in Fort Worth now where Jane was born and grew up.
We had a nice dinner with them and walked around an impressive water park downtown (the water flows down the concrete sides into a pool at the bottom). I guess water is not quite so scarce here as in Santa Barbara (certainly not last month when they had torrential rains almost every day). Incidentally, this feature apparently had a design flaw and some time back a handful of children and adults were sucked down into the pool at the bottom and drowned.
That was fun! (water park at dusk) |
Then Brendan's car broke down and we had an adventure getting it towed to a repair shop and getting home!
The following day we went with Brendan and Jane to a quite lovely restaurant for lunch and then wandered around some museums and the IMax theatre (movie of the South Pacific). A quiet day and a special visit with our friends.
The following day we drove to Duncanville where we lived for one year while working with Wycliffe Bible Translators.
The center houses much of the academic work of Wycliffe/SIL and we enjoyed driving around and seeing how it had changed in the last 23 years. Then we drove to our old house that we had bought when we worked with Wycliffe.
Midday we stopped to visit a dear Wycliffe friend, Betty Snell and had the pleasure of meeting some of her grown children. Betty and her husband Wayne (no longer living) have been missionaries in Peru for many years, and Betty continues to make periodic trips back there to continue their work. It was a special treat to reconnect with her after several decades.
Later in the day we visited Carol McKinney, another long term friend from Wycliffe (I had known her husband when I was in graduate school!) and had the pleasure of having dinner with her two girls and their families (and one of her sons).

This was a bit of a nostalgic day, returning to a place and people that were a central part of our lives about 23 years ago.
We were really glad that you could visit us! We are sorry and still embarrassed about the misadventure with our car.

How boring life would be without some misadventures! Really nice to see both of you.
